Some shows are meant to be watched. Others are meant to be heard. The Reawakening of the Gods, however, is something you step into.
At five in the morning, the Valley of the Temples is still suspended between night and day. The audience enters near the Temple of Juno while Agrigento is still asleep, walks along the Sacred Way and begins to encounter white figures that seem to have emerged from the ancient stone itself.
Then the sky slowly changes colour.
The columns of the Temple of Concordia begin to glow in the first light of dawn and, almost without realising it, the audience finds itself inside a world where Zeus, Athena, Aphrodite, Dionysus, Medusa, Cassandra, Narcissus and the heroes of the Trojan War no longer belong to a school textbook.
They are there.
And this is perhaps the reason why, after ten editions, the work created by Marco Savatteri is no longer simply a summer theatre production in Agrigento.
It has become a cultural experience, a tourism phenomenon and, during the summer of 2026, a genuine social media sensation.

Theatre begins before the curtain rises
In fact, there is no curtain.
The stage is the Valley of the Temples itself.
The landscape becomes part of the dramaturgy and sunrise becomes part of the performance. The production was conceived specifically as a site-specific experience: the gods emerge along the route, hide among trees and ruins, appear like living statues and guide the audience towards the Temple of Concordia.
Savatteri has explained that the idea was born while walking through the Valley and imagining ancient deities emerging from the stones.
From that vision came a project which, between 2017 and 2023, had already exceeded 40 performances and 22,000 spectators, before travelling to the Ancient Theatre of Taormina, the BIT tourism fair in Milan and international destinations including Paris, Los Angeles and New York.

But the heart of the production remains here, in Agrigento.
Seeing Athena or Apollo on a conventional stage is theatre.
Seeing them appear while the sun rises behind a temple built more than two thousand years ago creates something completely different.
For a few moments, fiction seems to acquire the right to become real.
This is not simply a postcard from Ancient Greece
It would be a mistake to describe The Reawakening of the Gods as nothing more than a beautiful mythological reenactment.
In Savatteri’s writing, mythology becomes a way to speak about contemporary humanity.
Narcissus becomes a symbol of a society obsessed with its own image.
Medusa forces us to question the way we look at others.
The Trojan War no longer belongs only to the past, but inevitably echoes the conflicts of the present.
The idea running through the entire work is simple and powerful:
human beings have changed far less than we like to believe.
Presenting the tenth-anniversary edition, Savatteri spoke about the need to recover the ability to look at the sky again.
In his vision, rediscovering myth also means rediscovering ourselves.

And when that reflection reaches the audience while a new day is literally being born over the Valley of the Temples, the metaphor becomes extraordinarily powerful.
The social media boom: millions of people saw the Gods without being in Agrigento
Then something happened that no traditional advertising campaign could have created so naturally.
The audience began posting videos.
Not polished promotional clips, but videos filmed by spectators.
A figure suddenly appears between the columns.
A deity walks along the Sacred Way.
The sun rises behind the Temple of Concordia.
And TikTok did the rest.
According to reports published after the 2026 edition, content connected to the production generated more than 257 million views on TikTok, while the final performances welcomed around one thousand spectators per sunrise, with several dates sold out.

Some individual videos give an idea of the scale of the phenomenon.
Posts related to the production reportedly reached 1.8 million, 1.9 million and even 2.9 million views, generating hundreds of thousands of interactions.
Social media content related to the production
What is particularly interesting is not only what becomes viral.
It is who becomes viral.
One video focuses on Dionysus.
Another on Artemis.
Another on Athena, Hera and Aphrodite.
Backstage clips show Ares, Apollo, Hestia and Andromache.
Viewers start recognising faces, searching for the performers, tagging them and following their personal accounts.
More social media references connected to the cast
This may be the most fascinating development of the 2026 edition:
the gods are leaving the Valley through the smartphones of the audience.
The new stars of the Valley
The 2026 cast is large and highly collaborative, but some performers are gradually becoming increasingly recognisable thanks to social media.
Among the leading performers are Martha Bellavia, Ilaria Conte, Sharon Costanza, Giovanni Geraci, Toti Maria Geraci, Davide Maria Incandela, Gioele Rosario Incandela, Andrea Lo Piccolo, Giulia Marciante, Chiara Sardo and Giulia Tarantino.
Different performances also featured special guests including Mattia Baldacci, Michele Casà, Aurora Catalano, Rebecca Ingrassia, Michele Iuliano, Antonio Melissa, Ilaria Mongiovì and Mario Tricca.
Full production details and cast information
The role of Zeus has been alternated by Gipeto and Silvio Laviano, while the role of Fate has been performed by distinctive voices including Daria Biancardi, Giovanna D’Angi, Ibla, Cristina Mazzaccaro and Claudia Rizzo.
The social media phenomenon is creating a curious effect.
Audiences are no longer remembering only “Athena” or “Dionysus”.
They are asking:
Who plays Athena?
Who is that Artemis?
Who is the Dionysus I saw in that video?
This is how a major ensemble production can also become an extraordinary showcase for a new generation of Sicilian performers.
Some clips demonstrate this clearly.
Content featuring Martha Bellavia as Artemis, for example, has reportedly exceeded 700,000 views, while other backstage videos involving cast members have reached hundreds of thousands of views.
Social media references linked to the Valley of the Temples production
This does not necessarily mean “celebrity” in the traditional sense.
Something more interesting may be happening:
a new audience wants to discover the artists behind the mythological characters.
Behind the Gods there is a major theatrical production
When the images are this spectacular, there is a risk of believing that the location does all the work.
It does not.
Behind every sunrise performance lies a complex production involving original music, singing, choreography, stage combat, costumes, makeup, set design, lighting and production management.
The libretto, original music and direction are by Marco Savatteri.
Choral arrangements are by Giovanni Scalici and Giulia Marciante, who also oversees vocal direction.
Arrangements and orchestrations are by Enrico M. R. Fallea.
The choreography is by Giovanni Geraci, while stage movement is developed by Savatteri himself and stage combat is curated by Gioele Rosario Incandela.
Production credits and artistic team
The visual component is equally important.
Valentina Pollicino creates costumes and accessories.
Sofia Cacciatore oversees makeup and the creation of the Fate costume, supported by Silvia Ippolito as seamstress and costume assistant.
The set design is by Valerio Vella, with Paolo Tuzzè as assistant.
Production direction is entrusted to Giuditta Bonelli and Claudia D’Agostino.
The show is produced by Savatteri Produzioni, a company that has built much of its identity around transforming Sicily’s tangible and intangible heritage into contemporary performance, while involving many artists and professionals under the age of 35.

This is important because The Reawakening of the Gods proves something that goes far beyond one theatre production:
culture can also become a creative industry, employment, professional training and international promotion for an entire territory.
From Agrigento to New Jersey: now the Gods speak English
The next step has already begun.
For the past two years, Savatteri Produzioni has collaborated with Montclair State University in New Jersey and Professor Teresa Fiore, through the Inserra Chair in Italian and Italian American Studies.
In March 2026, an English-language version, The Reawakening of the Gods, was presented publicly at Montclair State University.
The translation was created by Brianna Coppolino, who had already been involved in the project.

During the summer of 2026, five young performers connected to the American university then joined the Agrigento production:
Lizzie Caldon, Madison Fair, Mia Grizzuti, Lorenzo Hilliard and Emma Mason.
La Repubblica – From the Valley of the Temples to New Jersey
This is not simply a symbolic exchange.
The students travel to Agrigento, take part in rehearsals, experience the city and work directly alongside Italian performers.
Now the project is looking even further ahead.
The production is developing a complete English-language version for the United States, with the declared ambition of later creating an international tour.
The music is travelling too.
According to information released at the end of August, songs from the production had already reached around 30,000 streams on Spotify, and a full English-language recording is also being considered.
From Akragas to New Jersey.
Not simply to export a Sicilian show abroad, but to invite international audiences to make the opposite journey:
to come to Sicily and discover the place where the story began.
The 2026 edition has ended. What happens next?
The ten sunrise performances celebrating the tenth anniversary at the Valley of the Temples took place on:
2, 9, 12, 13, 18, 20, 23, 25, 27 and 30 August 2026.
The final performance therefore officially closed the 2026 Agrigento season.

As of 12 September 2026, no new dates at the Valley of the Temples or definitive dates for the American production have yet been officially announced.
It is therefore important not to confuse announcements about the US project with an event calendar already available for booking.
The American production is currently in development.

For the 2026 edition, tickets started at approximately €15 plus booking fees, with sales through Agrigento Biglietti and, for the special FestiValle performance, through DICE.
Since those dates have already ended, it is best to wait for the next official announcement before purchasing tickets from pages still showing the old August calendar.

When the Gods become ambassadors for Sicily
Perhaps the most important result of The Reawakening of the Gods is not measured in numbers.
It is what happens when a young woman in Milan, a traveller in London or a student in the United States suddenly sees fifteen seconds of video:
a white figure walking between ancient columns,
the Temple of Concordia in the background,
and the sky over Agrigento slowly turning pink.
The first question is:
“Where is this?”
The second is:
“When can I go?”
And this is where theatre, tourism and destination promotion become part of the same story.
For ten years, Savatteri and his company have tried to awaken the Gods.
In 2026, something else happened.
The audience awakened too.
And now, through millions of screens, sunrise in the Valley of the Temples continues long after five in the morning.
